[ Is he an actual person? Who can look at kittens and think about how they might break? ]
That's generally why we take them into our care.
[ Somehow the idea of this very stoic gentleman wrestling with whether or not to take kittens home was the single most adorable thing Q had seen all day. And he was in a fucking shelter. Full of cats. ]
[ People who are afraid of breaking things, that's who. ]
You think you'll have the time?
[ He glances sideways at Q. Kittens are reflected in his glasses. Somehow, it only makes it worse. He can imagine Q playing with a kitten. It hurts in that way good things hurt that you're terrified of losing. Q would be happy, he's sure. Athos can't countenance happiness that seems that pure. ]
[ Are we still talking about kittens. Why are you making kittens needlessly dramatic, Athos. he glances up at the glass, and one of them mews through it and tries to stand up -- paws pressed against it.
It's too cute. He looks away again before it does something to him like, who knows, makes him feel an emotion or something.]
[ Q also turns because his mind is made up. This older cat is definitely his for the day and he needs an attendant. Maybe this ... strange gentleman will keep up the conversation. He's kind of enjoying himself, now. ]
You'd have to have terrible security for it not to.
You can't force something to stay if it doesn't want to.
[ Not even a cat.
If we're still talking about cats.
Still, Athos takes a step closer to the glass after a moment and digs out a hand. The kitten is watching him, bright eyed, and flings itself at the glass again while Athos carefully presses a finger to the other side.
He looks entirely solemn about this. The kitten looks determined to work out how to kill his finger through the glass.]
[ It isn't a large place so someone will be right over soon. Yes, that one. Yes he's very very sure. He'll be along for a younger one after this one has adjusted, thank you.
It's not long before he's back at the strangest person he's ever met. Strange and yet somehow very adorable. Just look at him press his finger to the glass. ]

so at least he has both going for him. ]
If I don't, I'll make time. I haven't had a pet in years and I miss the companionship.
[ The smallest sweep up and down of him, trying to figure him out. ]
Is their fragility the only thing keeping you from adopting the whole basket?

I travel a lot.
[ You know. Work. ]

Work?
[ A pause for the answer. ]
I'm in a similar predicament although far less travel.

He turns away from the glass and considers Q, blinks dark eyes at him as he weighs up his answer. ]
Athos Armand. You might know me better by a different designation.
[ 005. Married to his job, careful, determined, ruthless, organised, drinking problem on record.
Apparently dramatic about kittens. That wasn't on his file, though. ]
